IOTA plays first violin in the EU project ORCHESTRA

Repeat offenders: The IOTA Foundation has joined another EU consortium with “ORCHESTRA” – funding included.

The EU project ORCHESTRA is a consortium of 15 organizations and companies from six EU countries. The project, which was launched on May 1st, develops concepts for traffic management in the age of IoT and self-driving vehicles – on land, on water and in the air. ORCHRESTRA is conducted by ITS Norway, a Norwegian association of 70 companies from the transport industry. But Germany is also represented with two participants: In addition to the Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM), the IOTA Foundation is also a prominent player from the German-speaking crypto space at ORCHESTRA.

As the IOTA Foundation announces on its blog, it is part of ORCHESTRA as the only provider of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). IOTA’s fee-free transaction model and its solutions for decentralized identities should be of particular importance for the EU project. The IOTA Foundation has received funding of around a quarter of a million euros from the EU for its commitment to ORCHESTRA. The project is funded by the EU with a total of around 5 million euros.

IOTA in action

ORCHESTRA is planning two pilot projects, one in Italy and the other in Norway. In the Italian real laboratory, the focus should be on travelers, with one focus being on getting to the airport. Specifically, it concerns the international airports in Milan, which are also a member of ORCHESTRA. In Norway, however, the “multi-modal”, ie freight transport that takes place via different vehicles, is to be orchestrated. This is done, among other things, with the help of IOTA Streams, a framework for sending and receiving transaction and data streams. The digital identity solution IOTA Identity is also used. The foundation illustrates how the whole thing looks schematically on its blog:

Repeat offenders in Europe

It is not the first EU project in which the IOTA Foundation is involved. IOTA is also involved in Dig_IT, for example involved, a project dedicated to ethical mining. In addition, the IOTA Foundation is part of the EU project CityxChange. This is about concepts for the city of the future, with a particular focus on the expansion of renewable energies. CityxChange as well as Dig_IT and ORCHESTRA are part of the EU initiative Horizon 2020. In addition, IOTA was ennobled by the European Commission in 2020 as a “Key Innovator”.
