iPad is getting a little closer to Macs, thanks to iPadOS 17

iPadOS 17 is available in beta, and the first feedback is here. What to see if the expected overhaul of Stage Manager to make the iPad look like a computer has paid off. But also if the arrival of the personalized lock screen and the addition of interactive widgets are really interesting.

During its WWDC 2023 held earlier this month, Apple lifted the veil on iPadOS 17, the next version for its iPads. The operating system has since been in beta before its official launch scheduled for the fall, so many have tried it.

Finally, a flexible and usable Stage Manager

During our test of the iPad Pro 11 M2 under iPadOS 16, we were disappointed with Stage Manager. This is a function that allows you to open several floating windows, just like on a computer. However, the size of the windows and their arrangement was difficult to adjust. What prefer to use the good old multitasking mode.

The journalist from 9to5Mac Chance Miller was able to test iPadOS 17 and says he is satisfied with the evolution of Stage Manager. The freedom is much greater and the experience is closer to macOS. The tablet OS is more flexible on overlapping windows. One can instantly open windows with a keyboard shortcut, resize and move them.

Finally useful widgets on the iPad and a customizable lock screen

Two years ago, Apple introduced widgets to the iPad home screen with iPadOS 15. Unfortunately, until now, they were only useful for display. That is, if you clicked on it, the application in question opened. With iPadOS 17 beta 1, widgets can be interactive. What to launch music, control its connected objects, open an email, etc.

In addition, the home screen is also more flexible: you can now leave empty spaces between widgets and applications. All of this makes widgets much more useful on iPad.
