iPhone 12: Apple launches four new smartphones

On October 13th, Apple presented its new iPhones. This is in the four new models that are due to appear shortly.

Once again, Apple boss Tim Cook (59) welcomed the fans to a new event of the tech giant on October 13th – but again purely digitally because of the Corona crisis. This time Apple presented four new smartphone models at its keynote: the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 mini, the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

5G is coming to the iPhone

As was to be expected, the new 5G standard will also be supported by the upcoming iPhone models. This should make it possible, among other things, to download videos, music and audio books much faster than before or to stream content without problems.

Of the new smartphone models, Apple first presented the iPhone 12 on Tuesday, which wants to score points with its simple, elegant design, flattened edges and five different colors. The device has a "Super Retina XDR" display with 6.1 inches. The so-called "Ceramic Shield" used in the display is said to be tougher than any other material that is otherwise used in smartphone displays.

The new A14 bionic chip is said to offer up to 50 percent higher CPU and GPU performance compared to the competition, thanks to which, for example, games should also come into their own, including the new "League of Legends: Wild Rift", which will also appear for iPhones. And the cameras were also screwed on. With new functions – such as a revised "Night Mode", which will also be available for the front camera – and a new two-camera system, even better images are to be created. In addition, the iPhone 12 should offer the first smartphone camera that enables HDR videos to be recorded with Dolby Vision.

In addition, "MagSafe" is installed for the first time. The novel magnet system should enable more efficient wireless charging and connect the smartphone with accessories – including a leather case – that can be easily attached. In addition, Apple has introduced the iPhone 12 mini, which basically has the same features, but is even smaller and therefore offers a 5.4-inch display. According to the manufacturer, it should be the "smallest, thinnest and lightest 5G smartphone" in the world.

The iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 mini will be available in versions with 64 gigabytes, 128 gigabytes and 256 gigabytes – from 876.30 euros and 778.85 euros, respectively. The iPhone 12 can be pre-ordered from October 16 and will be available from October 23. Fans will have to wait a little longer for the iPhone 12 mini. This can be pre-ordered from November 6th and will be available from November 13th.

The Pro line of iPhones is also growing

After that, Apple presented the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, which have similar strengths as the two sister models, but come with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays and a new design. A new image signal processor and fresh wide-angle lenses in the three-camera system should guarantee even better snapshots. A LiDAR scanner should also make augmented reality experiences even more realistic.

Of course, the A14 bionic chip is also installed here and "MagSafe" is on board. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone Pro 12 Max are available in the memory variants 128 gigabytes, 256 gigabytes and 512 gigabytes and in four different colors. The devices will cost from 1,120 euros or 1,217.50 euros. The iPhone 12 Pro can be pre-ordered from October 16 and will be available from October 23, the iPhone 12 Pro Max consumers must wait until November 6 to pre-order. The devices will appear on November 13th.

A new HomePod

Apple also showed a new version of the HomePod – the HomePod mini. The smart loudspeaker comes in a scaled-down, minimalist spherical design. Thanks to the support of the voice assistant Siri, the devices should also be suitable as a central point of contact for the entire smart home. Several speakers can be distributed throughout the house and play the same content simultaneously. If two speakers are set up in a room, they should work as a stereo pair.

Siri should, for example, automatically recognize which family member is making a request and also handle all other typical tasks of a voice assistant. The "Intercom" function can also be used to send voice messages to all connected loudspeakers. The HomePod mini will appear in two colors, should be available from November 16 and cost 96.50 euros. The new model can be pre-ordered from November 6th.
