Actually, the dynamic refresh rate of 10 to 120 Hz of the iPhone 13 Pro (Max) already enables an always-on display, similar to what Apple is already using with the Apple Watch. What good is an even lower refresh rate?
Background: As already mentioned, Apple uses a display whose refresh rate can currently be reduced to a maximum of 10 Hz. The competition from Oppo and Samsung, for example, can already do this better. Their smartphone displays are able to be updated much more slowly, 1 Hz is sufficient. This saves even more power and is ideal for an always-on display.
Should Apple adapt the technology for the displays of the iPhone 14 Pro, there would really be nothing standing in the way of such a screen. For example, it could be displayed necessary basic information of the lock screen – Time, date, receipt of a new notification, etc.
