Last December, Mark Gurman and MacRumors agreed on a new feature specific to the iPhone 16: a new button focused on video capture. In an article published on January 18, The Information added its two cents by sharing new details.
Distancing itself from previous rumors, the American media initially assures that this new button would not be capacitive, but mechanical. Apple would still have opted for a range of possible actions by making it react to pressure and touch.
Concretely, The Information explains that it would allow you to zoom in and out by sliding your finger sideways over it. We also learn that users will be able to “focus by lightly pressing the button and activate the shutter by pressing the button more firmly”.
This button would not be exclusive to Pro models, as is unfortunately the case with the Action button reserved for iPhone 15 Pro. The media emphasizes that Apple considers this new feature to be a major selling point for the iPhone 16.
The Information concludes by emphasizing that no other cosmetic changes would be planned for the iPhone 16. Please note, the format should still evolve, with the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max larger than their predecessors. This development would also make it possible to bring the x5 optical zoom of the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the iPhone 16 Pro.
As a reminder, MacRumors affirmed last month that the new button would be positioned at the bottom of the right edge. Thus, it would be possible to hold the iPhone 16 horizontally as you hold a traditional camera, with your index finger directly on the shutter button.
