Despite fierce competition, particularly in the entry-level smartphone market, Apple continues to dominate the market head and shoulders and places several of its iPhone in the ranking of the ten best-selling smartphones in the world.

A crisis ? What crisis? Despite a turnover which contracts very slightly during the year 2023, Apple continues to post insolent sales figures for its different ranges of iPhone. Despite prices much higher than the sector average, and in a context of slowing smartphone sales, the American manufacturer has achieved the feat of placing several of its references in the ranking of best-selling mobile phones in 2023. Better yet: it is the most recent and most expensive models that take the lion’s share, with several tens of millions of copies sold last year.

The iPhone monopolizes the first five places in the ranking

It is the Canalys institute, which is responsible for estimating smartphone sales volumes each year, which today gives us this overview of smartphone sales around the world.

According to the analysis, the best-selling smartphone in 2023 is the iPhone 14 Pro Max. This model, the most expensive in Apple’s range, was released in September 2022 and has reportedly sold 34 million copies. The iPhone 15 Pro Max follows in second place, with 32 million phones sold. Consumers and Apple fans seem to have appreciated the change in design of the smartphone, which adopts a titanium frame, and the developments in the photo section. We also note that consumers remain attached to large smartphones, and favor screens larger than 6.5 inches.

Third place is still held by Apple with the iPhone 14, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro (which we tested here). The two models would have sold 29 million copies each during the year 2023. Fifth place is finally awarded to the iPhone 13 with 23 million phones sold. The model, older and offered at a slightly lower price, has managed to convince the general public, even more than two years after its release.

Apple leaves only crumbs for Samsung, which is afloat with its entry-level smartphones

Samsung only comes in sixth position with the Samsung Galaxy A14, and its 21 million copies sold. The Korean manufacturer seems to have managed to build a reputation on the entry-level market, but does not benefit from the margins made by Apple on its premium models. We also find Samsung in eighth and ninth place, respectively with the Samsung Galaxy A54 and Samsung Galaxy A14 5G. No high-end model from the manufacturer manages to enter the ranking of the 10 best-selling smartphones this year.

In tenth place, and with 17 million copies, it is Apple which finally closes the row with the iPhone 15 and its 17 million copies sold in a few weeks.

Apple indicated during the presentation of its quarterly results on February 2, 2024 that iPhone sales had increased by almost 6% compared to 2022. The activity represents more than half of the total turnover of the business.
