iPhone broken? On 80 pages, Apple tells you how to repair it

For the first time, Apple is offering customers extensive repair instructions in addition to original iPhone parts and the right tools. For self-service repair on newer iPhones, Apple has published PDFs detailing the steps involved.

Apple had announced the program for a long time, now it has started, at least in the USA. Official spare parts and matching tools can be purchased by every customer through the “Self-Service Repair Offer”. For them too new repair instructions Apple, on the other hand, doesn’t want any money. They are available as a free download on the Apple website (source: Apple).

The instructions look like this:

At the beginning, Apple only offers Instructions for newer iPhones at. This includes the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 series as well as the iPhone SE 3. Apple would like to add other models in the future. In addition to repair instructions for iPhones, there are also repair instructions for the new Studio Display and Mac Studio as well as for iMacs and MacBooks. Apple has also published instructions for some AirPods.

The example of the iPhone 13 Pro makes it clear how extensive the instructions are. The PDF has a total of 81 pages, on which, among other things, the Replacing the display and the battery is easy to understand and explained with pictures. There is also a code in the instructions that must be quoted when ordering spare parts. So Apple would like to make sure that the right instructions are at least available.

Apple: Over 200 parts and tools on sale

Right from the start of the program, Apple is offering over 200 original parts and tools for self-service repairs in the USA. Doing it yourself can be worthwhile, because the bundle for replacing the battery on the iPhone 12 costs around 70 US dollars (equivalent to almost 67 euros). If customers send the old battery back to Apple, the price drops to around $47. For comparison: Replacing the battery in an Apple workshop currently costs around 87 euros in Germany.
