Apple is innovating: in 2022, the brand will start selling some 200 spare parts for the iPhone 12 and 13 in order to be able to repair your phone yourself.

It is a step in the right direction to fight against planned obsolescence. The American brand Apple has just announced that it will allow recent iPhone owners (the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13) to be able to buy spare parts in order to repair their phone themselves. No need to go through an Apple store or an Apple authorized service center to have your smartphone repaired.

Called “Self Service Repair”, this new online store will initially be deployed only in the United States. But Apple is already announcing that other countries (we do not know the details) will be affected by 2022. It will offer more than 200 spare parts and tools to correct the most common problems encountered by iPhone users . We obviously think of the broken screen, a battery whose autonomy is too weak or a photo sensor to change.

A more flexible and more ecological system

If initially only the iPhone 12 and 13 are affected by the Self Service Repair, Apple is already announcing that the offer will also quickly concern Macs with the M1 chip, indicates the brand in a press release issued on the 17th. November 2021. And there is a good chance that the Californian firm will gradually add new products to this list. By facilitating access to these spare parts and providing repair manuals, Apple is taking a good step in the fight against planned obsolescence, allowing iPhone owners to keep their phone longer, or give them a second. life so that it can be used by another person in the family, for example.

The goal here is to facilitate the repair of its devices. Some 5,000 authorized suppliers and 2,800 independent repairers around the world had access to spare parts, tools and manuals. But the wait could nevertheless be long to gain access to Apple’s “genius bar” and prices remain high for repairs, whether or not the device is still under warranty. This new service will help reduce costs. An unknown, however: Apple does not specify whether personal intervention on his smartphone – to change a broken screen for example – renders the smartphone warranty null and void.
