An Iranian police officer has received a warning after challenging the obligation to wear the Muslim veil for women, local media reported on Monday (February 13th).

A video that has gone viral in recent days on social media shows a police officer working in western Iran telling a woman that he does not consider the veil compulsory for women. “This lady wants to go out with this outfit, don’t worry, it’s none of my business“replies the officer to a woman asking him to reprimand another woman not wearing the veil in a public space.

Warning and police training

The broadcast of this video took place in the context of the protest movement sparked by the death on September 16 of Mahsa Amini. This 22-year-old Iranian Kurd died after her arrest in Tehran by the morality police who accused her of having broken the strict dress code imposing in particular on women the wearing of the veil in public.

The police officer was summoned by the inspection service and given the necessary warnings and training, after a detailed investigation“Said the Tasnim agency, citing a statement from the police of the province of Kermanshah (west).

After the start of the protest, more and more women were seen bareheaded in the street, or in cars, without causing a reaction from the police. In January, local media reported, however, that police had resumed monitoring the wearing of hijab in cars, texting the owner of the vehicle in case of violation of the dress code, without threatening sanctions.
