(Reuters) – Iran and Venezuela, two major oil-producing countries under heavy U.S. sanctions, signed a 20-year cooperation agreement on Saturday.

The agreement was initialed by the heads of diplomacy of the two countries, in the presence of the Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, and his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro, during a ceremony at the Saadabad palace, in the north of Tehran, broadcast to Iranian public television.

The document provides for cooperation between the two countries in many areas – oil, petrochemicals, defense, agriculture, tourism and culture – as well as the repair of Venezuelan refineries and the export of technical and engineering services.

Nicolas Maduro also announced that a weekly flight connecting Caracas to Tehran would be inaugurated on July 18.

The Venezuelan president is on a two-day visit to Tehran, after visiting Turkey and Algeria.
