Iran experiences massive protests after Mahsa Amini’s death

Despite the crackdown, protests continue across the country in response to the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini after her arrest by the vice squad. The 22-year-old, from Kurdistan, was arrested on September 13 in Tehran for “wearing inappropriate clothes” by the morality police, a unit responsible for enforcing the strict dress code in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The death of Mahsa Amini has drawn strong condemnation around the world as international NGOs have denounced a “brutal repression” demonstrations. Eleven people died in several days of unrest, according to an official report of September 22.

At the UN podium on Wednesday, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, said he was in solidarity with the “brave women of Iran”.
