TAll occasions are good for expressing one’s discontent in Iran, including the most tragic ones. The collapse on May 23 of a building under construction in Abadan, one of the main cities in the south of the country, killed 36 people, leading to a series of demonstrations across Iran, organized to denounce the incompetence and the corruption of the authorities. A wave of anger that follows other large-scale rallies that rocked the country in early May, after the government of ultra-conservative President Ebrahim Raisi decided to remove several subsidies on basic necessities, leading to a dramatic rise in the prices of basic foodstuffs. At least five people had been killed in the repression of the forces…
