(Reuters) – The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said on Saturday that ongoing talks with Iran on a range of important topics raised “great expectations”.

Rafael Grossi began meetings in Tehran on Friday that diplomats say are aimed at pushing Iran to cooperate with an IAEA investigation into traces of uranium enriched to a level close to that of nuclear weapons, discovered in undeclared sites.

“Overall, there are two sets of issues that are important. It is clear that there are high expectations for our joint work to advance the issues that Iran and the Agency are working on, to clarify and provide insights. credible assurances about Iran’s nuclear program,” he told reporters in Tehran.

“The second set of questions, which is very important, concerns the scientific and technical cooperation that we have and will continue to have with Iran,” added the IAEA director general alongside Mohammad Eslami, chief of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization.

Rafael Grossi said the talks were taking place in an “atmosphere of work, honesty and cooperation”.

His visit comes as contacts have been made with Tehran over the origin of the uranium particles, enriched to a level of 83.7% close to the 90% threshold for the manufacture of weapons, in its underground factory of Fordow, according to an article by the UN nuclear watchdog seen by Reuters.

Mohammad Eslami said on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic was enriching uranium up to 60%.
