Iran: pardon or remission for more than 1,500 prisoners at the end of Ramadan


Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will pardon or commute the prison sentences of 1,542 prisoners on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting for Muslims, according to a statement released on Saturday.

On Eid al-Fitr, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution agreed to pardon or commute the sentences of 1,542 convicted prisonersby Iranian courts, the statement on its official website said, without specifying who was eligible for the ruling. The Eid al-Fitr holiday begins Monday in Iran.

Ayatollah Khamenei regularly grants collective pardons on major religious holidays, in agreement with the head of the judiciary.
