Iran says it seized two Greek tankers in Gulf waters


The Iranian Revolutionary Guards had protested against the seizure by Greece of a ship carrying Iranian oil. Athens denounced an act of “piracy”.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic, announced Friday (May 27) that they had seized two Greek oil tankers in Gulf waters, shortly after protesting Greece’s seizure of a vessel carrying Iranian oil.

In a statement on their website, the Revolutionary Guards said their naval forces had “today seized two Greek oil tankers (…) for violations they committed“. The Greek Foreign Ministry accused Iran of “piracy“. “These acts are similar to piracysaid the ministry in a statement, calling on Greek citizens to avoid traveling to Iran.
