Ireland: Simon Harris, 37, will become Prime Minister

ATHLONE, Ireland (Reuters) – Simon Harris was named leader of Fine Gael, the ruling center-right party in the Republic of Ireland, on Sunday, allowing him to succeed Leo Varadkar, who resigned, as leader. Prime Minister.

At 37, Simon Harris will become the youngest head of government in Irish history. He is expected to take office on April 9 following a vote in Parliament, where Fine Gael and its coalition partners have a majority.

His appointment comes after the surprise resignation last week of Leo Varadkar who cited a “combination of personal and political reasons”.
