Facial recognition could make a comeback with the Pixel 6 Pro. initiated on smartphones Google in 2019 with the Pixel 4, this feature was quickly abandoned by the Mountain View firm as a security measure. Only the fingerprint reader has been kept.
However, new clues suggest that Google is finally ready to back down.
Soon facial recognition for the Pixel 6?
A Reddit user made an interesting discovery while setting up his Pixel 6 Pro. When he was asked to choose a backup method to unlock his phone, a “Face” option appeared alongside the existing ones, including the fingerprint reader and the PIN code. However, the person in question was unable to test anything and it was impossible for him to make the option appear in the settings afterwards. Strangely, this mention of facial recognition was flushed out in a stable version of Android, rather than the betas where Google is testing its future features.
Other users have tried to find this option to no avail. On his side, 9to5Google discovered that it has been buried since 2021 in security-related source code, but only recently surfaced. However, some lines of text found in Android 12L Beta suggested that Google was seriously considering this possibility. The code suggested that Pixel smartphones would be capable of “ switch from face authentication to fingerprint reader “. Maybe the American giant is ready to take the plunge? To be continued…
