Is I, Captain a good film? Here are the first spectator opinions on this migratory odyssey by Matteo Garrone

Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone is back with I, Captain. Did the film convince its first spectators? Overview of some Internet reviews.

Released this Wednesday, January 3, 2024 in our theaters, has the feature film convinced its first spectators? While it obtains an average of 3 out of 5 from the press, it rises to 3.7 out of 5 from the public, thanks to the 111 people* who have rated it to date (including 31 critics). Here is a short summary of spectator opinions on Me Captain.

For the record, this film was very noticed and awarded at festivals. Its director Matteo Garrone received the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and its lead actor, Seydou Sarr, was also rewarded, despite this being his very first role in the cinema. The film has just been nominated for a Golden Globe. Me Captain is a crossing, an odyssey, full of surprises, very strong in emotions. Were Internet users touched by this film?

They liked

Gautier DEROUBAIX (5/5): “Fantastic, beautiful, wonderful. Very poignant story, very beautiful images, 5 star production. The director shows us these stories on the big screen.”

Frédéric M. (4/5): “Brilliant, moving, relevant, shocking, the film is a slap in the face of a disturbing current fact. We understand and accept the notion of Freedom, which seems so naturally acquired to us but which is not for everyone. The acting is perfect, a very beautiful production, beautiful photo. A must-see film to become aware of certain values. Thanks again to Allo Ciné for the preview.

Direct-actu.fr (4/5): “A lesson in courage and humility. A film that recalls the hell these economic migrants go through to simply try to change the lives of their families by trying to settle in Europe. They are not profiteers of the system, but heroes! This film raises awareness of the pain hidden behind the migration of these people from countries where the economic climate is complicated. With Seydou Sarr the revelation of this HUMANIST film.”

They liked it less or didn’t like it

velocio (3/5): “We would have liked to see only positives in this Matteo Garrone film! Certainly, there is a lot of positive in “Me Captain”, if only all these scenes where the director gives the spectators the feelings of the migrants, but we cannot help but regret having had difficulty entering really in a film that looks like a tale which is a little too much like a catalog of the tragedies that migrants “on the way” to Europe can undergo. We also regret the choice of the departure conditions of the two main protagonists, a choice which will make it possible to reinforce among certain spectators the idea that there is no reason to welcome into Europe men and women whose lives , nor freedom are in danger, their only motivations for leaving their country being economic.”

(2/5): “Bland and monotonous fresco, clumsy, nevertheless captivating. We come out without really understanding or knowing the protagonists who do not have much depth, neither on their characters, nor on what they imagine they will find in Europe, nor on what exactly they are leaving or fleeing. Almost all the action focuses on migration and its “adventures”, chronologically, without perspective, without finesse, without delving into the people or the circumstances. The actors are hardly convincing with the exception of the mother. This epic, which should be moving, only astonishes, and turns out to be long and frustrating. An essential subject, but a bad film, which all the same has the immense merit of showing a reality that is poorly represented, in any form or medium whatsoever.

PL All (2/5): “Theme treated to the point of boredom, seen and well-known scenario which fits in its pitch, banal production, boring film of which one wonders what the objective is. To be avoided.”
