The Meta group is working on the creation of a social network that would approach Twitter by taking inspiration from what Mastodon did.

His code name: P92. The Facebook giant’s parent company, Meta, is developing a decentralized content application, not to say a social network, which would allow the publication of “text updates”. Like Mastodon, the platform will support the ActivityPub networking protocol. The idea? Propose some kind of alternative to Twitter.

A social network like Twitter and Mastodon that would be closely linked to Instagram

The information, revealed by several American media, was confirmed by Meta. ” We are exploring an autonomous decentralized social network to share text updates. We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures could share news around their interests. “Explains the firm of Mark Zuckerberg.

The P92 social network, if it were to really see the light of day, would be closely linked to Instagram and would even bear the brand of the group’s photo/video platform. For example, users could register and then log in directly using their Instagram credentials. Their profile data would then be transferred to P92.

The sharing of data from Instagram for the creation and use of its P92 account would nevertheless be minimal. For the anecdote, it is the boss of the image sharing application, Adam Mosseri, who took the lead in this project. But today, beyond the technical feasibility, which is frankly not a concern for Meta, it is mainly legal questions that arise, around the confidentiality of user data in particular.

Taking advantage of Twitter’s current difficulties

In any case, Meta wants to take advantage of Twitter’s current difficulties to bring out an alternative platform. This would therefore be decentralized, which means that users could enjoy great freedom by configuring their own servers and establishing their own moderation rules.

It could also allow message broadcasting between servers as well as mutual monitoring. However, will this application based on the ActivityPub protocol be interoperable with other platforms such as Mastodon? It is still too early to tell.

Regarding the potential features of P92, actionable links with posts, images and videos should feed the platform. Verification badges should also be present. They could also be paid for, a detail that is not exclusive to Twitter, since Meta is also preparing its paid offer which will offer its users (against 11.99 to 14.99 euros per month, depending on your registration method ) better visibility, verification badge and better spam protection.
