Is opening Tesla Superchargers to other vehicles a good idea?

On January 31, 2022, Tesla officially opened its network of Superchargers to electric vehicles from other brands. For the moment, only a few stations are concerned. But is that a good idea? This is the subject of our survey of the week.

By deploying a pilot program in the Netherlands on November 1, 2021, Tesla was expected to turn the corner on the opening of Superchargers to everyone in other European markets. It did not take long for this project to extend to the French network, to allow electric vehicles from other brands to use Tesla terminals.

This major change was made on January 31, 2022 and concerns a total of 16 stations dispatched to the four corners of France. The expansion of this program will allow it not only to make its vast network profitable, but also to strengthen it through new investments. A positive spiral, in short, which should benefit everyone.

Fears

For non-Tesla customers, two tariff formulas have been established: one consists of paying full price per kWh, the other of paying a monthly subscription of 12.99 euros to benefit from an average reduction of 50%. For example, the Périgueux SUC can either cost you 0.55 euro per kWh, or 0.37 euro per kWh with the monthly membership.

But this opening of the network also tends to stir up the fear of some. Owners of a Tesla will have to share hitherto exclusive stations, at the risk of seeing a few traffic jams appear during holidays or major crossovers.

Good or bad idea ?

Another problem arises: the size of the Tesla charging cable, which is sometimes too small and unsuitable for other electric cars – the charging hatch is not placed in the same place on all models.
