Is Scorsese thinking about retirement? His opinion on Tarantino gives a clue

At 80 years old, Martin Scorsese is not yet ready to retire! Asked about that of Quentin Tarantino, the director of Killers of the Flower Moon gave his opinion on the question.

For several years now, Quentin Tarantino has been telling everyone that he will retire after his 10th film. This work, entitled The Movie Critic, the filmmaker is preparing at this very moment, confirming that it will indeed be his last feature film. After this future filming, the 60-year-old director wishes to devote himself to writing novels.

For his part, Martin Scorsese, 80 years old, one of the artists who most influenced Tarantino, continues to offer us ambitious works. On October 18, Killers of the Flower Moon hit theaters, earning excellent reviews and a strong start at the box office.

Retirement for Scorsese?

Asked by Associated Press on Tarantino’s decision, the New York director shared his feelings about possible retirement. “I do not know at all”he simply replied. “I’m built differently than Tarantino. I really am. He’s a writer. It’s a different thing. I make up stories. I’m drawn to stories through other people”explains Scorsese.

I’m built differently than Tarantino. I really am.

“All means are different, all ways are different. I respect writers and I wish I could be one. I wish I could be in a room and create these novels, not films, novels”underlines the director.

“I’m always curious about everything. If I’m curious about something, I think I’ll find a way. If I stick with it, I’ll find a way to try to make something of it in cinema, but I have to be curious of the subject. My curiosity is still there. I cannot speak on behalf of Quentin Tarantino or others who are capable of creating these works in their universe”confides Martin Scorsese.

A seasoned novelist

The latter highlights the qualities of a novelist and screenwriter of Tarantino, who has always written the scripts for his feature films. He notably won two Oscars for Best Original Screenplay for Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained.

The director of Pulp Fiction has never directed a work not written by him. In this, Scorsese implicitly tells us that Tarantino is now more of a writer than a director. This is also corroborated by the person concerned himself.

“The other appeal of this decision to focus on books is that once I’m done working, that’s it. Whereas with a screenplay, you work, and work, and work some more .And when it’s finished, that’s really where it begins!” The director specifies that he still loves filming, that he still enjoys it. However, “writing has this massive advantage: when everything is on the page, it’s done”hammered Tarantino in the columns of Release.

The filmmaker has also recently published two books: the novelization of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Cinéma Speculations. Released last March, this work combines personal history, colorful and tasty anecdotes, analyzes and film reviews.

The book offers the reader, carried away by the unique and exhilarating verve of Quentin Tarantino, a fascinating lesson in cinema and life. A good way to keep us waiting before The Movie Critic, which should not be released in theaters until 2025 at the earliest. The story will follow the film critic’s “Travis Bickle” (Taxi Driver) in 1977 Los Angeles.

As for Scorsese, he is already off on his next project, an adaptation of David Grann’s book, Castaways of the Wager. Leonardo DiCaprio will still be there after Killers of the Flower Moon!
