- At least 28 people have been killed in attacks in several major cities in Afghanistan.
- The largest bomb attack was aimed at a Shiite mosque in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif.
- The terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack.
The bomb attack in Mazar-i-Sharif claimed at least 20 lives and injured 60, as a doctor in the provincial capital told the DPA news agency. At prayer time, an improvised explosive device exploded, a Taliban official said. Eyewitnesses estimated the number of victims significantly higher and spoke of at least 50 dead.
People were also killed or injured in explosions in the capital Kabul, in Kunduz and in the eastern city of Nangarhar.
Attack on school in Kabul
Already on Tuesday there was a devastating attack on a school in the capital Kabul, in which numerous people were killed. Local reports spoke of up to 25 deaths, but the authorities did not provide precise information.
In recent months, the number of attacks in Afghanistan has increased again. The IS claims a large part for itself, which appeared in Afghanistan at the beginning of 2015 and wants to establish a dominion, especially in the east and in areas of neighboring Pakistan.
Increased terrorist actions by IS
Once declared defeated, IS is still active today and regularly carries out attacks against Shiites and the Taliban. The Sunni extremists consider Shiites to be apostates from the “true faith”, even though they are also Muslims.
“The rest of the year will be bloody if the Taliban fail to protect the public,” terrorism expert Jonathan Schroden wrote on Twitter.
Afghans are lamenting the recent attacks on the Shiite minority and are demanding more security guarantees from the incumbent Taliban government. After the withdrawal of the international NATO troops and the capture of the capital Kabul, the Islamist group repeatedly promised to ensure peace in the country.
