Perhaps you’re particularly interested in Google’s newly announced Pixel 7a. But have you considered the waterproofness of the device?

If the device has many qualities, such as its price and its camera, it is clear that you may have to look elsewhere if you want to get your hands on a truly waterproof smartphone.

Pixel 7a: an almost perfect smartphone

This week has been particularly rich in terms of tech news, and especially thanks to Google. While numerous leaks have unfortunately diminished the impact of the announcements made by the American giant, the latter has nevertheless offered us an annual meeting to match with its I/O 2023 conference. While, for its part, the Pixel Fold will have limited availability, and its price will be particularly high, the Pixel 7a on the other hand presented itself as a very attractive mid-range device, both in terms of price (509 euros) and in terms of features .

However, if there is one point on which the Pixel 7a does not perform, it is its waterproofness. After all, no one is perfect, right?

The Pixel 7a will not put water in its bath

Indeed, the Pixel 7a boasts an IP67 dust and water resistance rating. In other words, this means that it can theoretically survive in water for about thirty minutes, at the most, and at a depth of one meter. Even though the Pixel 7a shares a few features with its bigger siblings, the waterproofing sadly doesn’t. For comparison, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro have IP68 certification. As you will have understood, it is not with a Pixel 7a that you will be able to take underwater photos.

As our colleagues on the site rightly point out Android Police, the water resistance level of a device does not really mean that it is waterproof. This is more intended to give a benchmark as to the ability of the smartphone to resist certain liquids, such as in the event of light or heavy rain for example. This is why Google recommends that you keep your smartphone away from sinks, showers, and especially swimming pools. So now you have been warned.

Google Pixel 7

  • Its value for money
  • A premium design
  • A nice bright screen

More premium, more powerful, and even more comfortable in photos, the Pixel 7 is a real success and confirms the good momentum of Google initiated last year. Like its elder, the Pixel 7 Pro, it disgusts all the competition in terms of value for money and even manages to match or supplant smartphones more expensive than it.

Its charging speed, which is too slow, is its only major flaw. The rest is only minor or logical. It gets a little warm, isn’t the best performer for powerful 3D games, and its battery life isn’t best in class. Once we are warned of all this, the Pixel 7 does not offer any unpleasant surprises.

Finally, the most difficult thing is not to know if it is the best at its price: it is. The real challenge is knowing who to choose between it and the Pixel 6 Pro, now available at almost the same price, or 799 euros. The answer is in the format. If you swear by rather compact smartphones, the Pixel 7 remains a better investment. It will be more powerful, more enduring, prettier and a little better in photos. If you love having fun on a large screen, and if for you, the telephoto lens is an obligation, then turn to the 6 Pro. In any case, there will be no wrong choice.
