Is the right to abortion threatened in France? Understand in three minutes

The president of the National Rally, Marine Le Pen, reacted to the announcement by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, of a bill providing for the “freedom” of women to resort to a voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) in the Constitution by qualifying the text as “totally useless”. “No political movement, whether in the National Assembly or outside, asks for the questioning” of this right, judged, Sunday October 29, the former candidate for the presidential election.

However, several states in which abortion is a right enshrined in law have recently tightened the conditions of access to abortion, without banning it, which has practically led to its de facto disappearance. This is the case in Poland, where, since 2021, several women have died, due to failure to obtain a medical termination of pregnancy in time.

In the United States, the decision of the American Supreme Court, in June 2022, to revoke federal protection of the right to abortion deprived thousands of women of secure access to its practice. In France, no political group is currently calling for a tightening of the rules governing abortion. However, not all French women benefit from the same access to abortion.
