The publisher Funcom benefits from the theatrical release of Dune 2 to reveal more about his video game Dune: Awakening. It will not be a straight adaptation of the films, although Funcom is working in collaboration with Legendary Pictures.

Now that Dune 2 has been released in cinemas, the wait is likely to be long until the release of a possible third film. But imagine that Funcom could help us wait thanks to video games Dune: Awakeningwhich was revealed in a trailer released on March 5.

Many fans of Denis Villeneuve’s films will no doubt wonder if Dune: Awakening is a direct adaptation of Dune and of Dune 2 (themselves adapted from Frank Herbert’s first book). Funcom works in collaboration with Legendary Pictures, a media company, including sharing some artistic elements, but Dune: Awakening will not retrace the story of Paul Atréides.

Dune: Awakening game will be an MMO

Availability

Dune: Awakening will be available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at an unknown date. MMO requires, there will be a beta.

To offer fans of the Dune universe an extraordinary adventure, Funcom has opted for a genre that it masters: the MMO with an emphasis on survival. This decision is logical in relation to the characteristics of the universe imagined by Frank Herbert. The planet Arrakis, control of which is coveted due to the presence of the Spice, offers an interesting setting for imagining survival mechanics. So, you will have to struggle to obtain water — a precious and rare resource on Arrakis. The developers promise us a “ unique and extremely ambitious open world “.

The MMO component implies that you will have to make allies in Dune: Awakening, in addition to fighting enemies. We will be free to play who we wish, with skills inherited from one of the two powerful orders (Mentats or Bene Gesserit) and affiliation to a House (creation of a minor House or alliance with an existing Great House). You can choose to be a specialist or, on the contrary, to be versatile. The trailer shows various ways to get around Arrakis, knowing that you will have to be careful to avoid the immense sandworms. Dune: Awakening will also put the management of the Spice at the heart of the gameplay: it will be possible to sell it and/or consume it (with great risks).

To note that Dune: Awakening should impress thanks to the use of the Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine. With this wise choice, we understand why Legendary Pictures is not afraid of seeing its creations be reused. There is also a making-of entitled From Book to Film to Game which provides information on the reconstruction of Arrakis. Greig Fraser, immensely talented cinematographer, reveals some secrets.
