Is this a cold shower for Sony, a new failure?

It’s complicated for Until Dawn Remake. Sony must endure another hard blow and perhaps expect yet another failure of one of its exclusives. We will explain the situation to you.

Many have been protesting against excessive remasters and remakes for several years, especially on the PlayStation side. Despite the possible criticisms, we can also find good points. For example, it is often an opportunity to introduce a game to a new audience on a new generation of consoles or, even, to expand its audience by taking the opportunity to produce a port to another platform. This is for example the case for Until Dawnwhich has just been released on PS5 and PC 9 years after its initial release on PS4. But, in this specific case, the initiative didn’t really work as Sony hoped…

Until Dawn remains in small committee

On October 4, 2024, Until Dawn got a new release on PS5 and PC via a remake by Ballistic Moon. This version follows the original story closely, but makes slight changes in direction (with a final surprise at the conclusion). Also count small new features in terms of items to recover. Finally, it is especially in terms of graphics that the studio has carried out a complete overhaul.

However, this does not seem to have been enough to convince the PCists. In fact, Until Dawn Remake is off to a particularly calm start. And more than that, the number of users is only decreasing. Thus, on the evening of October 4, we counted a peak of 2,572 players simultaneously on Steam. Since then, it’s been a gradual decline, with the latest peak reaching only 1,505 players as of October 7.

We are not far from the catastrophe Concord. For comparison, the remake of The Last of Us Part I had gathered more than 36,000 people when it was released on PC. Even the remastered compilation Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves climbed to 10,851 players. More recently, the porting of God of War Ragnarok got off to a good start, peaking at 35,615 players just after its release.

Several reasons can explain this crash ofUntil Dawn. First, the fact that it is a remake can affect the reception of players. What’s more, the game was released in 2015, so it’s still recent to be fresh in people’s minds. A fortiori, it is a purely narrative game, with little gameplay. Therefore, not everyone will find it interesting to do it again. Especially since the game has been made, made and remade by hundreds of streamersso many have already seen it and know the story inside out. We can therefore understand these uncomplimentary figures for Sony.
