"Is trendy": Germans buy more self-tanners

There are various ways to bring a holiday feeling home. One of them: a holiday look from the tube. This method is apparently gaining popularity in Germany.

In view of the corona-related travel restrictions, consumers in Germany use self-tanners significantly more often. In the first half of the year, around 13 percent more tanning aids were bought in the grocery and drug stores compared to the same period last year, the market research company Nielsen said. By contrast, the demand for sunscreens declined: consumers bought around a fifth less than in the previous year. Even more often they left après-sun care on the shelves.

"Corona left clear traces in 2020. Because of the vacation trips and the like that were canceled due to the lockdown, significantly fewer sunscreens and après sun ended up in the shopping baskets of the Germans," said Enrico Krien, an expert in beauty products at Nielsen Germany. "Self-tanning, on the other hand, is the trend."
