Isère: three people stranded in the caves of Sassenage, significant resources mobilized

Three speleologists have been stranded underground since Thursday afternoon in the caves of the Cuves de Sassenage (Isère), located in the foothills of the Vercors, near Grenoble. They were surprised by a sudden rise in water.

They would be a hundred meters deep, stuck in a room where the high ceiling allowed them to take refuge.

They would have been surprised by the speed with which the water rose following a downpour, not expecting such a situation to occur, given the low rainfall in recent hours, Le Dauphiné Libéré reported. .

“Only 7 millimeters of water were forecast. In the end, it fell nearly 31 millimeters. There was a concomitance of unforeseen meteorological events which led to all this”, explained the mayor of Sassenage to France 3.

A school outing at the start

The three speleologists are two men, holders of the state certificate, and a woman, a teacher in a college in the Grenoble region. The Isère prefecture indicated that they were supervising a school outing. All the children would have managed to get out of the Cuves before the flood, they added.

The prefecture announced the establishment of an emergency system, in order to proceed with an evacuation “when the weather permits”. A team from the Perilous Environment Reconnaissance and Intervention Group (Grimp), as well as about thirty cavers, are on site.
