A tragedy took place this Thursday in Sassenage, in Isère. The locality known for its underground tanks to explore saw a group of schoolboys surprised by a sudden rise in water in the middle of a caving trip. Some group members were stuck for several hours. The rescue operations are over but one of the cavers has died.

The group was surprised Thursday morning by the sudden rise in water in the cave of Sassenage, in Isère. The three supervising adults, a teacher and two speleologists, were able to evacuate the 28 teenagers from a 5th grade class. But the adults couldn’t get out. They remained prisoners of these galleries, a site very frequented for years by schoolchildren. One of the two speleologists died in the evening.

She allowed the students to get out of the cave

It was only in the early evening that a weather window opened to allow rescuers to enter the cave. They were the ones who discovered the lifeless body of the guide, a 55-year-old woman, explains the prefect of Isère Laurent Prévost: “She is a woman who was herself a trainer on this type of activity. “All the speakers last night knew her. The whole community of speleologists and rescuers is in mourning. The first feedback we got last night indicates that it was perhaps while ensuring the exit of the last students of this class that this guide endangered her life and lost it,” he added.

On the side of the college students, it is obviously a trauma, the amazement won them over when they learned of the death of their supervisor: “It is upsetting for the lady, very sad because she tried to save a life and she died “, confided Lenny, one of them. “She tried to save a teacher and suddenly she fell and drowned. To know someone who spoke to us just before and to know that she died soon after. It’s heartbreaking,” he said. -he adds.

An investigation has been opened to find out the exact circumstances of the accident. Knowing that the rain showers which fell yesterday in the region of Grenoble, were much more important than what had been expected by the weather.
