“Islands of Italy” is a nature documentary by Arte about some of the most beautiful and diverse of the country’s more than 200 islands. Their geological origin, flora and fauna make each island unique. The show has been broadcast since 2019.

Pantelleria is a dormant volcano, although it has been a long time since the last eruption. But it’s still steaming, bubbling and bubbling all over the island. The island is Italy’s closest piece of land to Africa. The Arabs who settled here once called the island the “daughter of the wind”. The name is no coincidence, as the cold Mistral and the hot Scirocco alternately sweep across Pantelleria. The gardens, often laid out in terraces, protect the almost 8,000 residents with walls made of lava rock.
Pietro Di Malta built many of them. His first name is a family tradition and was chosen deliberately. Pietro means: stone. Even his great-grandparents called themselves “Pirriatri”, i.e. those who specialized in working with stone. One is his innate talent as he describes it, freediving and harpoon hunting are his passions. He is regularly on the hunt for the typical Mediterranean fish in front of the cliffs of the island.
One of the most famous sights of Pantelleria is the Specchio di Venere, the “Mirror of Venus”. This sulphur-scented turquoise inland lake was formed 16,000 years ago when a large section of a volcano collapsed in on itself. In many places sulfuric water wells up from the ground at a temperature of up to 50 degrees Celsius. The lake is particularly popular for mud baths. Pantelleria’s coasts offer steep cliffs and windswept nature. Nothing that attracts most tourists. Those who come to the island want pure history and nature.
