Is it always cold and rainy in England? But you did the calculation without the Isles of Scilly. The small islands off the coast of Cornwall convince with a mild climate and beautiful nature.

About 45 kilometers off Land’s End, the westernmost point of mainland England, lie the 140 small islands of the Isles of Scilly in the Atlantic – of which only five are inhabited: St. Mary’s, Tresco, St. Martin’s, Bryher and St. Agnes . What is special about the archipelago: The Gulf Stream creates an almost Caribbean feeling there, palm trees, white sandy beaches and mild temperatures make you doubt that you are actually in England. However, the water temperature quickly reminds you that you are in the Atlantic.

For whom?

For nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet: Beautiful and well-kept hiking trails, impressive flora and fauna (especially dolphins and birds can be observed here) and beaches with the finest white sand make the heart of nature fans beat faster. But the charming little towns and some historical monuments also invite you to explore. Luckily there is only one thing you will never find on the Isles of Scilly: crowds of tourists.

Why now?

Peak season on the Isles of Scilly is during the summer months when it is at its hottest. In May, however, the archipelago also impresses with pleasantly mild temperatures of around 15 degrees. Another plus: May is the sunniest and least rainy month on the islands!

OK, how do I get there?

There are two ways to get to the Isles of Scilly from the mainland: by plane – the so-called Skybus, a small propeller plane, from Exeter (60 minutes flight time), Newquay (30 minutes) or Land’s End (20 minutes). St Mary’s. In spring there are usually one or two flights a day, depending on the departure airport.

There is also a ferry to St Mary from Penzance every morning. The crossing takes about three hours. You can also easily island hop between the main islands by ferry.

Where do I put my feet up?

There are charming bed and breakfasts on all the main islands. Most of the accommodation is on St. Mary’s. The Star Castle Hotel is considered the best hotel on the island – and is a sight in itself: the castle from the 16th century offers a wonderful view of the harbor and a wonderful garden. And it’s only a five minute walk to the main town of Hugh Town. Double rooms are available from around 300 euros per night.
