From immigrant to technology visionary sounds typically American, but it takes place in Germany. In the 1980s, Ismet Koyun had a few German marks in his pocket; today he runs a global market leader for security solutions. He is frustrated by German hesitancy because the potential is huge.

In the 1980s, Ismet Koyun traveled to Germany as a Turkish immigrant with 20 D-Marks in his pocket. Today he runs Kobil, a global market leader for security solutions, and calls himself the “Anatolian Elon Musk”. Germany needs courageous people who are prepared to take risks and break new ground, he says in the new episode of “So techt Deutschland”. Koyun criticizes the hesitation in the German innovation ecosystem and advocates for a culture that promotes entrepreneurship and creative solutions.

A key project, the All-In-One app, illustrates his vision of a platform that not only strengthens direct contact between manufacturers and customers, but also provides secure and easy handling for everyday needs from financial transactions to city bureaucracy. The app already has five million users in Istanbul. In Germany, it will soon start in Worms and will digitally bring together local administrative services, social life and entrepreneurial offerings.

Koyun is convinced that Germany has the potential to be at the forefront of technological development, but calls for a decisive rethinking of digitalization and the use of new technologies. “We have to let go of the old technologies and look boldly into the future,” he makes his criticism clear. But he hasn’t lost his optimism: “I love this country and believe in German engineering,” affirms Koyun. For him, one thing is certain: with the right mindset and an open attitude towards innovation, Germany can significantly improve its position in global technology competition.

In the new episode of “So techt Deutschland,” Isemt Koyun explains how this can work and how he sees the future of digital administration.

Frauke Holzmeier and Andreas Laukat spoke to Ismet Koyun. You can watch the entire conversation in the podcast “This is how Germany techs” listen.
