Isolation from Corona Virus: Five-year-old writes to old neighbors

Hardly anyone feels comfortable in social isolation – this applies to both the elderly and the children. The elderly must be particularly careful not to get the corona virus and therefore often suffer from loneliness. Children quickly get bored because they are less likely to go out and cannot meet their friends to play with. Nevertheless, both groups should stick together and support each other. Five-year-old Kirah has shown how to do this.

The girl from the English city of Wolverhampton had seen that a 93-year-old neighbor lived in the neighborhood and decided to write a letter to him. In it she asked whether the man was fine. She also sent him a small gift: "I painted you a rainbow to remind you that you are not alone," Kirah wrote. The recipient's granddaughter shared the letter on Twitter – as did her grandfather's answer.

Penpal connects generations

The senior wrote back to his young pen friend that he was very happy to hear from her. He was fine and he found it nice that someone was worried about him. "The situation with the corona virus is very bad and we all have to do our best to get through it and hopefully get out of it in good health," he replied to Kirah.

He was also happy about the girl's gift: "I thought your rainbow drawing was great and I will hang it in the window so that people can see it." In various countries, rainbow pictures in the window have meanwhile become a symbol that children who cannot leave the house also live there.

The penpals have already received more than 20,000 retweets and 145,000 likes on Twitter. Celebrities like actor Stephen Fry also spread the exchange of letters. So far, her grandfather only knew the family of Kirah by sight, his granddaughter who wrote the tweet said – after the end of the corona restrictions, both will hopefully get to know each other personally.
