The US and Israel are usually great friends. Now US President Joe Biden is letting criticism shine through. Speaking to media representatives, Biden said he hoped Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would abandon the plans to restructure the judiciary.

These are Netanyahu’s plans

Benjamin Netanyahu wants to weaken Israel’s Supreme Court. It should be possible to reverse court judgments by means of a majority decision in Parliament. According to Netanyahu, the judiciary in Israel has too much power.

In Israel, therefore, there have been mass protests on the streets in recent weeks and months.

The answer to Joe Biden’s words was not long in coming. Netanyahu announced on Twitter: “Israel is an independent country that makes its own decisions. These decisions are not made because of foreign pressure – even from your best friend.”

In a second short message, Netanyahu added that he had known Joe Biden for 40 years and appreciated his commitment to Israel. Despite these occasional differences, the bond between Israel and the United States cannot be severed. Nevertheless, contrary to some rumours, Benjamin Netanyahu will probably not be invited to the White House in the near future. Joe Biden also said this to the journalists.

Judiciary restructuring stopped for the time being

On Monday, Netanyahu stopped the controversial restructuring for the time being. After weeks of protests, the Israeli head of government now wants to seek talks with the opposition.

At the earliest, the plans of the Israeli government should now be presented to parliament for a vote at the end of April.
