Israeli airstrike kills four in Damascus, says Syrian Observatory for Human Rights

“Commitments” but no “guarantees” that Beirut airport will not be bombed, according to Lebanese transport minister

The Lebanese Minister of Transport, Ali Hamie, announced Tuesday to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that he had only obtained “commitments” but no ” guarantee “ firm that Israel would not bomb Beirut airport, close to the southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold targeted daily.

The authorities “want to keep the land, sea and air terminals operational and, first of all, the Rafic-Hariri international airport”he said. “The enemy [israélien] spares neither civilians nor apartment buildings (…)how would he offer guarantees? »he adds.

After “international contacts”Beirut obtained “commitments. And there is a big difference between firm guarantees and commitments”he added, rejecting Israeli accusations that weapons intended for Hezbollah transit through the Lebanese airport and border crossings.

On Monday, Washington warned against any attack on the airport or the roads leading to it in order, in particular, to allow those who wish to leave Lebanon. Despite the strikes which sometimes target areas close to the airport, planes from the Lebanese company take off and land there every day.
