Israeli airstrikes in Gaza after rocket attack

GAZA, June 18 (Reuters) – The Israeli army said it carried out airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Saturday in retaliation for a rocket fire towards the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon.

No casualties have been reported so far in Gaza or in Israel, which intercepted the rocket fired by the Palestinians.

The Israeli army blamed the ruling Hamas in the Gaza Strip and said in a statement that it had targeted targets of the Islamist movement.

A spokesman for Hamas’ political wing declined to comment. (Report by Nidal al-Mughrabi in Gaza and Maayan Lubell in Jerusalem, French version Tangi Salaün)
