Issey Miyake made a name for himself as a fashion designer, especially in the 70s and 80s. He experimented with materials and cuts. Born in Hiroshima in 1938, Issey Miyake survived the 1945 atomic bomb but did not want to be defined by it, although as a result he suffered from a bone marrow disease that left him with a limp. In a 2009 campaign for The New York Times, he wrote: “I have tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to put it behind me and prefer to think of things to create rather than think of them to destroy, and to bring beauty and joy.”
