With the small P12 ZR, i:SY is currently the only compact e-bike with a Pinion motor transmission unit. This promises numerous advantages.

At the last Eurobike there were numerous new e-bikes for the 2024 season, but a new drive system stole the show from many of the innovations. We’re talking about the Pinion motor transmission unit (MGU). This is also used in Bulls’ new S-Pedelec.

The Pinion MGU is currently considered by some to be the holy grail of drive concepts. The engine and transmission form a combination here. An almost maintenance-free rear derailleur sits in a housing together with the electric motor.

In contrast to derailleur shifting, electrical shifting with a Pinion gearbox also works when stationary and (with minor interruptions) even under load. Pinion bikes are often available with a belt drive, which further reduces maintenance requirements. The P12 ZR presented here also comes with a belt drive instead of a chain.

The product name already suggests it: the manufacturer uses a Pinion gearbox with twelve switching stages. The twelve gears offer a development of 600 percent. Together with the engine’s generous torque of 85 Newton meters, even steep mountains can be conquered.

E-bike innovations of the year

In contrast to the Fiido Titan we last tested (for the video review), you can use the i:SY P12 ZR within the completely legal framework. The motor supports your pedaling movements in accordance with the law up to a maximum speed of 25 km/h. The battery capacity is pleasingly generous at 800 watt hours.

Other practical details include the frame-mounted luggage rack, the factory-installed mudguards and the LED lighting. There is also an integrated frame lock from Abus.

Price, availability and alternatives

The i:SY P12 ZR is now available to buy from the manufacturer at a price of 5,999 euros. However, with a weight of 25 kilograms, the compact e-bike is quite heavy. If you can do without the Pinion drive, you will find an alternative in the i:SY Skyfly E5 ZR F for 5,599 euros.

The e-bike looks very similar to the P12 ZR, but offers a Bosch mid-motor, 5-speed hub gear and weighs only 18.8 kilograms thanks to the carbon frame. We will introduce you to other e-bike innovations of the year here.
