"It hit me emotionally": Hummels no longer watches DFB games

"Hit me emotionally"
Hummels no longer watches DFB games

It was "a kind of shock" when he was kicked out of the national team by national coach Jogi Löw a good two years ago, says Mats Hummels in an interview. The Rio world champion is still suffering from it, but only comments on the BVB future. There he finally wants to see "adult football".

Mats Hummels has been watching since November 19, 2018. On that day, the BVB defender had played his last of 70 international matches. That the expulsion by national coach Joachim Löw is still gnawing at him, the 2014 world champion now confessed in the "Sport Bild": "It was surreal not to be part of the whole, it was kind of a shock." After all, from 2007 onwards, he was always there for eleven or twelve years.

Since that day, Hummels has rarely watched the national team's games on television, "because it really hit me emotionally to have to watch". On the other hand, the defender did not want to participate in the discussion about his return to the DFB-Elf – and that of Bayern professionals Jérôme Boateng and Thomas Müller. "To agonize over a theoretical situation is useless: That will only be found out, should it come to that," said the 32-year-old. He would then deal with it for a short time if Löw should change his mind again.

The BVB professional also spoke about his future in the interview and said that he definitely wanted to play in Dortmund for another two and a half years. "Then I have to see how my health is in summer 2023: Everything is conceivable, including that I will stop. For example, when the head says 'No'," explained Hummels. Even if it would then be "almost too late" to move abroad, he did not want to rule out such a career move, as his experience in professional business would have shown him that you cannot plan anything precisely.

Hummels complained about the frequent mistakes in Borussia Dortmund's game in the recent past that the way the team played football "inevitably meant that we kept dropping points." It would have been too easy to give away balls, goals and points. The 32-year-old wants to come back to the fact that it is "no pleasure" to beat BVB.

Despite the recent 2-0 success over VfL Wolfsburg, Hummels did not spare criticism: BVB may have a lot of very strong talents, but "too often they don't play adult football". You just can't win a championship title like that: "Train easily for five days and then drive up to the game – that just doesn't work." BVB is currently in fourth place in the Bundesliga table and is eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich. On Saturday (6.30 p.m. in the live ticker on ntv.de.) there is a groundbreaking duel with RB Leipzig.
