“It was very difficult”: this drama which struck Nils Tavernier before the shooting of his last film

This Wednesday, May 11, Ima was released, Nils Tavernier’s latest film. Just before filming, the director experienced two tragedies: the death of his mother, Colo, then of his father, Bertrand.

For Nils Tavernier, the shooting ofIma will forever remain special. Just before this film, with Dadju and Karidja Touré, the director experienced two dramas in quick succession. “He lost both his parents just before the filmexplained the rapper, who is starting out as an actor, on the set of En aparté this Wednesday, May 11. He lost his mother and his father, whom he greatly admired. It was very difficult for him at first.” According to Dadju, Nils Tavernier saw his feature film proposal as a “chance” to mourn. “He is someone who sees things positively, he added. He didn’t want everyone to come see him. On the contrary, he wanted to go away, to be immersed. This film allowed him to escape.” In June 2020, Nils Tavernier’s mother passed away. It was her ex-husband, Bertrand Tavernier who announced the sad news of the death of his ex-wife and mother of his two children.

The death of this renowned screenwriter – she won the 1985 César for best adaptation for A Sunday in the Country and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival ten years later for The Bait – had upset him. “Life had separated us but I feel a void and a lack. Colo trained me, jostled me, made me grow. We raised together Nils and Tiffany who I think of this morning”, he wrote then. The two separated in 1981 but continued to collaborate in the cinema for several feature films among the most acclaimed of the 7th French art. “There was, in what Colo wrote, a mixture of tenderness, of very acute sensitivity and, suddenly, his Irish origins which resurfaced, tenderly remembered Bertrand Tavernier in the columns of The Obs. She was the one who had the idea for ‘L’Appât’, which I loved doing. And it is to her that I owe the very harsh, Celtic scenario of the ‘Passion Béatrice’, the violence of which scares me.”

Nils Tavernier started his career with his father

Nine months after the death of Colo Tavernier, Bertrand Tavernier died at the age of 79. “With his wife Sarah, his children Nils and Tiffany and his grandchildren, the Lumière Institute and Thierry Frémaux have the sadness and pain to inform you of the disappearance, today, of Bertrand Tavernier”, announced the Lumière Institute. If he does not necessarily like to talk about the relationship he had with his parents, Nils Tavernier was rocked by their love of cinema. I discovered the image thanks to my father, I worked with him, so inevitably he sent me stuff. I was 12 when I fell in love with the camera, and I decided to make images and it was on a set with my father, confided the director, in 2014, in the columns of Gala. We also worked together on Les Grands Pêchés (On the other side of the ring road, 1997), so we exchanged.
