Tuesday May 31, 2022, Didier Deschamps lost his father, Pierre. In an interview with L’Équipe, Friday August 12, 2022, the coach of the France team returned to his disappearance.
Originally from Bayonne, Didier Deschamps is the second son of Pierre and Ginette. Close to his parents, the former footballer learned on Tuesday May 31, 2022 of the death of his father, with whom he shared the love of football. In a press release, Noël Le Graët announced that the coach of the France team had immediately left Clairefontaine after learning the news. “It is with great sadness that I learned of the disappearance of Didier’s father this morning. Didier went to join his relatives and I assure him of all my friendship and my support.“, shared the president of the French Football Federation. Last June, Didier Deschamps said after France’s defeat against Croatia: “We lacked energy and character even if it hurts. I didn’t have the usual strength and energy to impart to them.“
In mourning, the coach of the France team added: “It’s a bad time. It can happen too. You have to appreciate the good times.“Friday August 12, 2022, Didier Deschamps agreed to once again discuss the disappearance of his father. While it is still difficult for him to talk about it, he declared to The Team : “The death of my dad was violent for me, and sudden. Sometimes we can be prepared, but here we weren’t at all.“Remarking that he does not have his usual strength and energy since the death of his father, he added in conclusion: “I’m not going to prevent people from judging me and judging the France team on these matches. I don’t want to soften people up, or anything.“
Who was Pierre Deschamps?
A house painter by trade, Pierre Deschamps was a big fan of rugby, and had notably played under the colors of Biarritz Olympique. Married to Ginette, he had two sons, Didier and Philippe, who died in a plane crash in 1987. In a documentary on TF1, the former footballer confided about this drama: “It’s so unfair, but we live with it. We are obliged (…) The years have passed, time does its work, but we cannot forget. And then, it was at Christmas time… We remain marked for life, of course.“
