Italian police refuse to wear a pink mask

Polemic in Italy after the government’s decision to provide FFP2 masks to law enforcement. But why does this seemingly laudable decision cause a stir? Simply because the pink color of these devices embarrasses police unions, reports The Obs. Several police officers in the country have notably refused to wear the masks, because they “do not honor the uniform”.

Stefano Paoloni, secretary general of the SAP, one of the largest police unions on the peninsula, even took the floor to protest against the color of these FFP2s, even going so far as to write to the chief of police, Lamberto Gianni. He wishes to assure that he has no particular “prejudice” about this color, but that the blue uniform of the police was regulated and that therefore the masks had to be granted. The requested colors are “white, blue, azure or black” and “more sober”.

The leader of the union also thinks that this decision was not in good faith in a period of “growing aversion for the forces of order”. According to him, wearing masks “catchy or with excessive ornamentation” would be likely to harm the image of the institution with the population. These statements provoked strong reactions in a country which has paid a heavy price for Covid-19 with 172,000 daily contaminations currently and nearly 140,000 deaths since the start of the epidemic.
