Italy: Art lovers are drawn to Isola Bella

Isola Bella in Lake Maggiore is celebrated with a large exhibition this year. That is what makes the Italian island special.

As is well known, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in Italy it lies in the middle of Lake Maggiore. The Isola Bella is a jewel from the Baroque and especially this year a special attraction for art lovers: Because the island is celebrated with a large exhibition this year.

The gem in the middle of Lake Maggiore was nothing more than a rocky hill with fishing villages. Count Carlo III began in 1632. Borromeo redesigned the island for his wife Isabella d'Adda and had a palace built on the then "Isola Isabella". After a few breaks, Count Vitaliano VI. Borromeo started work again around 1650 and devised a palace and park landscape that is unparalleled today.

On the 400th birthday of the count

Vitaliano VI. also commissioned numerous paintings, sculptures and furnishings for the interior of the palace. They will be presented to a wide audience for the first time in the exhibition "Vitaliano VI. L'invenzione dell'Isola Bella" (Vitaliano VI: the invention of Isola Bella), which will last until November 1 on the occasion of the Count's 400th birthday .

Rocca di Angera Castle, which also belongs to the Borromeo noble family, focuses on contemporary art almost simultaneously. The exhibition "Fantastic Utopias", which can still be seen until September 27, brings together works by 15 important contemporary artists, including Ai Weiwei (62), who is well-known in Germany to people who are interested in art. The real highlight, however, are the gardens. The mosaics, statues and fountains with their artistic hedge designs form real theater stages and are real rarities.
