Italy: future host land for Alstom’s new hydrogen trains

The gigantic Alstom is preparing the arrival of the first trains powered by hydrogen in our Italian neighbors.

Alstom, a major historical player in the railway sector, is ready to transfigure the Italian railway landscape. Building on its autonomy record achieved with the Coralia iLint, it has just announced the imminent delivery of new models of hydrogen trains in the Puglia and Lombardy regions. A revolution in the mobility sector, which will take less time than that planned for civil aviation and its future use of hydrogen.

A leap forward for the Italian railway sector

Michele Viale wears two hats: Managing Director of Alstom in Italy and CEO of Alstom Ferroviaria. It is with a certain satisfaction that he expresses himself about this news: “ We are proud to supply Puglia’s first hydrogen trains and expand the Lombard fleet. These zero-emission vehicles will transform public transport in these regions, while creating new economic opportunities. “.

The old diesel models which crisscrossed the Puglia region will be replaced by two Coradia Stream Hs, ordered by Ferrovie del Sud Est. At the same time, Ferrovie Nord Milano has ordered two additional trains which will be added to six others already acquired in the past. Thanks to the agreement with Alstom, the operator will be able to purchase up to 14 trains of this type.

Locally produced trains

The Coradia Stream H are models that have been designed by Alstom teams specifically for the European market, and will also be manufactured entirely in the company’s Italian factories. The production and testing of these new trains will take place at the heart of the Alstom Ferrovaria Spa site in Savigliano, south of Turin.

The hydrogen system, tanks and lithium-ion batteries will be assembled in Vado Ligure, on the coast west of Genoa. All components will come from Sesto San Giovanni (north of Milan) and the signaling system will be developed in Bologna. Of Made in Italy almost pure juice, which will stimulate the country’s economy and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the railway sector. An initiative which is as much proof of technological progress in Italy as it is a step forward towards a future where public transport promises to be more eco-responsible.
