The number of new infections is lower than it has been in seven months. The incidence fell from 157.4 to 146.3 cases per 100,000 population in one week. The vaccinations are progressing. Since this Monday, most of the country has been colored yellow in the corona stage. Sardinia has made the leap from red to orange. Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily are also orange. Only the Aosta Valley remains a restricted area. Lombardy, which was once so badly affected by Corona, will soon be the first region in Italy to demonstrate herd immunity.
The course is set well for the tourist summer season. Rome nevertheless approaches the opening of the borders with caution. For Swiss people, whoever wants to travel to Bella Italia must present a negative PCR or antigen test and be in quarantine for five days. That doesn’t exactly create a travel mood. In ten days, however, everything could be different. The next decree of the Draghi government on the corona rules will follow on May 15. And that should be relaxed.
Cafes and beaches open to tourists
On May 1st, the chairs on St. Mark’s Square in Venice have been outside again. The first tourists take espresso again with a view of the Doge’s Palace. Italians so far. “We hope to see foreigners again soon,” says the host of the Caffè Florian to the Ansa agency. Veneto is yellow again, outdoor catering is allowed, at least until 10 p.m. From June 1st, guests can also have lunch indoors. Visiting the museums is allowed again. Timid steps back to normal.
Parasols have been stuck in the sand on the Ligurian coast since Saturday – each 4.5 meters apart. Ten square meters of space for every bather, according to the strict Corona rule. Reservation is mandatory, preferably online. Keep your distance from beach bars too. Group beach games are prohibited.
Islands want to be corona-free at the start of the season
Holidays on some of Italy’s small islands should be possible without any bans. There is gas with the vaccination. The ambition is to be “Covid-free” by the summer season. Lampedusa and Linosa are determined. Ischia, Capri and the Tuscan islands, first and foremost Elba, also want to be free of corona soon.
