Italy: It is now important to note this when entering and leaving the country

It should be a stone's throw from German Italy fans: The popular holiday destination opened its borders again on June 3. According to the Federal Foreign Office, tourists from the EU member states, the Schengen states, Great Britain and Northern Ireland as well as Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican state are allowed to enter. The summer vacation in Corona times seems secure. When entering and exiting Austria and Switzerland, there are a few things to consider for drivers and bus travelers.

Arrival via Austria

Although the borders between Austria and Germany remain closed for the time being, German tourists are allowed to cross them during the journey. The conditions: At the border, you undertake to leave the country "as quickly as possible", Josef Schreier is quoted by the Tyrolean regional government, among others by the Bavarian radio station. Intermediate stops are therefore not permitted, neither for refueling, nor for toilet or meal breaks at rest stops. Anyone who does not abide by it and gets caught by the police can expect a fine of up to 1,450 euros.

The signed transit declaration must be shown at controls. It can also help to prove that you have left Austria – for example by showing a hotel's booking confirmation. According to the Tyrolean state government, this is not always necessary. The same conditions apply to return travelers from Italy until June 15th. Then Austria also wants to open its borders again in general.

Arrival via Switzerland

Germans who want to go on vacation in Italy can also travel via Switzerland. Although it only opens its borders for tourist purposes on June 15, transit traffic is already permitted. The prerequisite: "All people who are currently legally in the EU / EFTA area", says the Foreign Office, should "be able to make credible when they pass through that they actually want to enter the destination country". Proof of a hotel booking is therefore imperative here.

Unlike when entering Austria, short fuel stops and breaks in Switzerland are permitted. The Swiss Office of Health confirmed this to the ADAC.

Arrival by train or plane

There are no trains from Germany to Italy yet. If you still want to travel to Italy without your own car, you can do so by air. According to the "Tagesschau" information, the airports in Rome, Milan and Naples are again accessible for international flights. On site, however, vacationers would have to expect strict controls including fever measurement.
