Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has tendered his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella.

His resignation seemed inevitable. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has handed in his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella, the day after his national unity coalition collapsed in parliament, the presidency announced. Mr. Draghi presented “his resignation and that of his government. The President of the Republic has taken note of it. The government remains in place for the management of current affairs”, announced the presidency in a press release.

Three parties belonging to Mario Draghi’s coalition had announced their non-participation in a vote of confidence requested by the Prime Minister on Wednesday in the Italian Senate, effectively leading to the end of his government of national unity.
