How to update Google Chrome?
Bugs CVE-2024-4761 and CVE-2024-4947 are respectively the 6th and 7th “zero day” flaws (which did not benefit from fixes at the time of their discoveries) that Google patched in 2024. Even more surprising, they are the second and third flaws of this kind fixed… in a week. To make matters worse, the two vulnerabilities were classified as “Graves» by the American Department of Defense, allowing each time to launch commands with elevated privileges on the targeted machine.
If your version of Google Chrome is lower than 125.0.6422.60/.61 (on Mac and Windows) or 125.0.6422.60 (on Linux), it is time to do a small update again. To check which version Google Chrome is running on, launch the browserpress the three vertical dots at the top right and go to the “Help» then click on “About Google Chrome“.
If your browser is not up to date, Chrome should automatically download and install the new version without you having to leave this page. Once this step has been completed, all you have to do is restart the software to be safe.
Chrome, security cheese?
The large number of vulnerabilities identified on Chrome during these first months of the year may tend to be scary, but it is actually rather good news. Indeed, the browser is so popular that it mechanically attracts more pairs of eyes capable of identifying potential bugs or significant flaws. The software is partly based on the free Chromium project (the sources of which are open and therefore regularly monitored) and serves as the basis for many other browsers such as Edge or Opera.
It is therefore easy to understand why armies of cybersecurity specialists dissect Chrome all day long and mechanically find more flaws than the rest of the browsers on the market. It is better to have a browser that is regularly updated to fill in flaws than software that surely also contains flaws (no code is perfect), but that no one cares about.
