Much less memorable than its predecessor, Joe Dante’s “Gremlins 2” divided spectators when it was released in theaters in 1990. However, Quentin Tarantino considers it a true masterpiece.
An insatiable movie buff, Quentin Tarantino never tires of (re)discovering films and recommending them. Throughout his numerous speaking engagements, it is not uncommon for him to give his listeners a very personal opinion on the feature films he likes.
While we recently heard him talk about M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable and Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, it was Joe Dante’s legendary Gremlins, and more specifically its sequel, that he was interested in. in his podcast The Video Archives alongside screenwriter Roger Avary.
“It’s an absolute masterpiece”
“I think Gremlins 2: The Next Generation is a f***ing masterpiece, it’s an absolute masterpiece. It’s the best transformation of a Mad Magazine into a movie.”he declared, referring to the famous American satirical magazine.
Directed by Joe Dante in 1990, the sequel to Gremlins was a real commercial failure internationally, grossing barely 42 million dollars (for a budget of 50 million).
Although it was rather better received in France, benefiting from a very decent audience rating of 3.5 stars out of 5 on AlloCiné, it never managed to reach the status of its predecessor.
Much crazier and sometimes a little messy, it followed the new adventures of Billy and Kate, fighting against a second invasion of Gremlins in a New York skyscraper.
The building housing genetic research laboratories, the creatures this time adopted alternative forms that were surprising to say the least, and the film therefore offered us an intelligent Gremlin (and gifted with speech), a female Gremlin, a spider Gremlin, and even …a plant Gremlin!
Tarantino, fan of the novel Gremlins 2!
Beyond the film, Quentin Tarantino is also a big fan of its novel adaptation, as he explained on his podcast, between bursts of laughter:
“They did something like that in the film adaptation into a novel, too. In the novel, the Gremlins attack the novelist. They come, they attack him, they snatch the novel out of his hands, they lock him in a closet, and the leader of the Gremlins continues his work to write a three-page manifesto, until the author escapes, chases the Gremlins away, and finishes his book.”
