Gnabry’s injury dampens FC Bayern’s mood

The draw in the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League satisfied FC Bayern. A good game against Arsenal FC – also because the London expert strikes again. However, Serge Gnabry was later injured, which was a downer.

Serge Gnabry and London – the dream connection comes to a halt after FC Bayern’s 2-2 draw at Arsenal. The former Arsenal professional turned up the heat once again when he entered a London stadium, but since the 69th minute of the game there has also been a downside: Gnabry was injured and will be missing from Munich again.

Gnabry remained lying on the floor without any intervention from his opponent and the medics who rushed to the scene had to send the signal to the bench for the necessary substitution. “It’s another thigh injury, he’s definitely out,” said Thomas Tuchel after the game on Prime Video. “This is definitely an issue, we have to find a solution for next week.” The second leg will take place next Wednesday in the Munich Arena (9 p.m./DAZN and in the ntv.de live ticker). Tuchel’s team then has to win in order to avoid the threat of their first titleless season since 2012.

Not only does Gnabry have to be replaced by another fit player in the Bundesliga game against 1. FC Köln at the weekend – which has already caused enormous problems for Tuchel this season – the 28-year-old has his offensive qualities again this time demonstrated. Gnabry has something of a built-in goal guarantee as soon as he heads to the English capital. He had scored six of his 15 goals in the Champions League by kick-off in London arenas – and this time too he continued the streak. With the equalizer to make it 1-1 (18th) after the early shock from Bukayo Saka (12th), he contributed to Bayern’s mature performance.

The winger only returned to the squad at the beginning of March after a long-term muscle injury that had plagued him since December. He crowned his comeback against Mainz (8:1) with a goal, and he also scored a goal in Darmstadt (5:2). In Saturday’s shocking 2-3 defeat at 1. FC Heidenheim, he collected scorer points with a goal and an assist. So Gnabry was actually in top form. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen also explicitly praised this after the game. Gnabry “fought back after a long injury break and scored a fantastic goal, thank you very much – and from the bottom of my heart, a speedy recovery.”
